     Cutting pine blocks

Just the way your parrot wants them cut.

Doing your own pine blocks will save you money and will give your parrot a never ending supply of blocks, which is just what your parrot wants.

If you have not tried this before, here are the instructions on how to get started.

You will need:  a saw, some fine sand paper, a work bench  (if you don’t have a work bench, a clamp and an old table will do).

For the ladies I recommend a fine blade, pull saw. I find this kind of saw a lot better to use.  For the guys I am sure you can manage any saw :-) so you can use whatever saw you have, but please make sure it’s clean.

If you go to B&Q and ask for untreated pine, you will be directed to the section for all untreated pine timber.

The best size to buy is 44mm x 44mm or 44mm x 70mm, and this comes in packs of 3 or 4 , or you can just buy a single piece.

The length of the wood is 7 foot, so you won't be getting it home on the bus :-)

If you have a car and no roof rack, take a saw with you to cut it down so you can get it in your car.  Some B&Q stores do have a cutting service and will cut the pieces in half for you.

making pine slices!!  Birds love them!!

I make these from the size 44mm x 44mm, and I cut it into thin slices, about 1cm for the small birds and 2cm for the larger birds.

Like in the picture below.

You can drill a hole in them and hang them up, also the larger size wood 44mm x 70mm  is great for making blocks to hang up. Make sure it’s cut the same way, and not too thick.

After cutting your blocks sand down with fine sand paper, so all edges are nice and smooth.

For the smallest birds, tiels, budgies, etc.... just cut as above, but do your slices very thin.

Making square blocks

You can also buy 34mm x 34mm and cut the same way as I have mentioned. If you cut it 34mm each cut, you get nice pine 34mm square cubes. They make great foot toys for the medium parrots, or you can drill holes in them and hang them up.

These are best suited for medium parrots. Most small birds prefer the wood cut in thin slices as explained above.

Please note, there can be some very hard knots in the wood. I always cut these out as they can splinter and I also think that they could chip a beak.

I hope this helps all beginners and if anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate in contacting me.

More information to follow
