A Happy Hut is a small tent-like item that your bird can hide inside,
it is made to hang by two fasterners from the top of the cage.
Birds sleep in them and sometimes sit on top of them. They are made from various kinds of material, and There are lots of differant sleeping huts on the market, that are made by differant manufacturers.
none of these huts are safe!!
any material happy hut/ snuggle tent etc…. is a hazard!! and I would never put one in any of my birds cages.
even if you check them every day, it only takes a short time for a bird to chew his way through a happy hut, and get into difficulty.
The hut could be fine when you went out to the shop, your bird could be DEAD on your return.

If you are not convinced!!

Then here are just a few of the many stories I have read about.

One lady had to rush her cockatiel to the vets after finding him caught up in his happy hut. The vet had to amputate his toe, and although the bird recovered, he was never the same again.

Before the incident her bird used to talk, but after that day, he never spoke another word, and a few years on, is still mute.

A lady purchased a happy hut at a very good pet store.  she inspected it before hanging it up in her birds cage.
In the morning she found her Quaker parrot had the stitches wrapped around his neck.

He had picked at the stitching, and loosened them. She was very lucky that she was at home at that moment in time, and was able to save her bird.

Had she not been there, her bird would not be here today.

A woman lost her bird because it had chewed through the inside of the hut without her realizing it. Her bird’s head got stuck in the shredded material and he strangled to death.

*************

A grey that had always slept on top of his happy hut,

Was found one morning, hanging upside down with his foot twisted in threads from his happy hut.

In attempting to free himself the poor bird had chewed off a large portion of his foot and two toes.

He was rushed to the vets and he spent 2 hours in surgery and required 50 stitches to have his foot repaired as well as possible.

Had the owner not found the bird when she did, he would have bled to death.

 *************

A woman bought her new Quaker parrot a happy hut; she left the bird alone for just 30 minutes while she went to get her daughter from school.

When she got home, she found her bird covered in blood, it was all over the cage and the walls.

The bird had got its toenail caught in the stitching.

If the bird had been left on its own for a longer period, it would  most certainly have bled to death.

this very sad email was sent to me (march 2010)
I just thought that you might want to place another complaint on your site about happy huts and anything that looks like a happy hut. I check on my Conures in the morning, and then in the evenings when I come back from work. Well, today... I saw my Conure stuck in the hut, dead. She tried to chew her leg off and chewed some of it off... her band got caught in the fibers...
I don't know... my other conures knew she was dead... I am heartbroken and am looknig now to replace her... because the cage is not the same and the others seem very sad.. and upset..

I HATE SNUGGLE HUTS... I read about death and other accidents before and did not take it that seriously since I've used them for about 5 years...
I am going to the store tomorrow and getting them a nice wooden box... never fabric again...

This just proves, no matter how long you have had your hut, or how much you check it, this does not guarantee your birds safety, the only way to keep your bird safe, is to take away the happy hut

it only takes a minute to loosen a thread!!

THERE IS A SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO THE HAPPY HUT

if you have had a bad experience with a happy hut, please email me with the details,
so I can add it to this page.
